Single Player Levels Mar. 98

3-25-98    Starseed 2  731K    SP
Authored by- Jeff Turner
This level is a sequel to his last level, Starseed. You will see that this author has vastly improved his editing skills with this really well rounded level. Some of the architecture is put together really fine adding to the realism of the level. The gameplay is very smooth and you should really be able to get into playing it as there are plenty of things to do and places to go. I liked the layout of the level and all the neat things you will get to do. The mission objectives work really well throughout the level and were pretty clear on what you needed to do at all times. The monster and item placement is pretty good making for a good fight, I was even surprised in the end by two different things the author has done. Hard skill is just what it claims to be... HARD but do-able. There is just enough ammo to get the job done. I think Jeff did a great job with this level and will be looking forward to seeing more from him in the future. This level was just what the doctor ordered so get it now!

3-24-98    The Azure Mine  1.32M    SP/DM/CO
Authored by- James Parkman aka "gloom"
Not to long after James offered us Bloodshrine, he comes out with these two masterpieces (the start level and the end level) which are the best set of user levels I have seen to date as they both compliment each other perfectly! This is a sequel to his last level. Here's a copy of some of the text in the file describing the mission. "Your goal is to destroy every PsiCrystal deposit in the mining compound, then escape the vile strogg by retaking a stolen viper that spies have discovered in the vicinity." The levels fit perfectly with this theme and just about every aspect of these maps was superbly rendered from the stunning architecture to the fabulous monster and item placement. You will even have to destroy the crystals to finish it as they are all tied into a sequence you will need to complete the mission objective! The gameflow was so soothe I could hardly believe it! Even the transition between the two levels was smooth as silk. He even has great secrets to find making this level very fun to explore. Is it tough? YOU BET IT IS!!! The hard skill is one of the greatest challenges I have had so far. You will no doubt be totally submerged in this map for hours as I was. Get it today.

3-24-98    Versicolored Vermination (final release)  780K    SP
Authored by- Roger Staines (Ace)
This level is presented to us as his first Quake 2 level. Roger's name might sound familiar because he has made some outstanding Quake levels which you still might have on your hard drive. You will be challenged right from the start as you take about 10 steps and are faced with danger. This is a nice large level with plenty of good secrets and lots of adventure. I was very impressed with the monster placement which made this level a lot of fun to complete. He is one of the first to really make use of the medic and it actually surprised me as they respawned some foes I had thought were not in the picture anymore! So, a little advise to you would be to make sure they are dead! The use of lighting in this level is a very nice touch, it made is a very pretty level to look at and also helped make it quite convincing. The flow of the level is very good giving the player plenty to do and you will pretty much know where you are going at all times. I spent many hours playing this level because it was so darn fun! I cant wait to see his next level so download this one today and see what all the fuss is about.

3-22-98    KSP70  881K    SP/DM
Authored by- Kurt Kowitz
This level was definitely a pleasure to play. From the the very beginning you will be challenged by your foes. The ambient sounds were almost perfect helping to give this level a really believable setting. The monster placement was almost uncanny. The author made great use of respawning and in many cases, even surprised me... it was like "that guy wasn't there a minute ago was he?" The setting is basically a base level with no new textures but they were all very detailed and looked nice. The flow of the game was very good with the player having to go back to other areas to complete the mission objectives. This was where the authors great monster placement makes the level unique and not just a base type level as seen from so many others as when you come back you are faced with many more challenges. This level was very challenging in the hard skill and was equally fun too! And on top of everything else, it was one of the best first levels I have seen! Grab it today.

3-19-98    The Relay Station  1.09M    SP/DM/CO
Authored by- Rick Troppman
This level blew my doors off! Rick has really done a great job with this soon to be one of your favorite levels. Your mission will be to disable the Strogg's 20 gigawatt Ku relay transmitter. The Strogg will not be happy to see you as you will soon find out in this heavily populated level! The first thing that impressed me from the very beginning was the use of ambient sounds throughout the entire level. They gave it almost and erie feeling as I went on. The monster placement was really good creating a very challenging level in all skill levels. I liked most of the architecture and the authors use of the lighting is really nice. The only problem with this level is a slowdown in a room which is mentioned in the text file. The mission objectives will let you know what's happening and what to do next. There are some very good secrets to find and will provide you with all of the necessary things you will need to finish. Very nice work!

3-16-98    Starseed   649K    SP
Authored by- Jeff Turner
I was very impressed with the quality of this first ever level by Jeff. It has a good mix of outside, inside, and underground areas which make the level very interesting. The only thing I didn't like was there were no difficulty settings but there are 80 enemies to dispose off which will keep you pretty busy. The author did a good job with his secondary objectives so I pretty much knew what I should be doing most of the time. The flow of this level was outstanding and helped make it a lot of fun. The placement of the monsters and the items you will need were pretty good and made this not only fun to play but a good challenge as well. Get it today!

3-16-98    Retribution   531K    SP
Authored by- Doug Magee
This was a very interesting 2 part level with some pretty neat special effects in it. The front end I have been testing (it will be released when it's finished) loaded the level backwards and I even found it to be good that way as well. You should enjoy playing this level in hard skill as it was quite challenging. The start area was a little plain but you wont have a lot of time after that for it to be a bother since the rest of the area is full of your buddies getting tortured and with enough guards to keep you busy. The level does stick to its plot fairly well with you going in and trying to rescue your co-pilot. Unfortunately you arrive a little too late and find he is already quite insane and have to kill him...

3-16-98    Payback   670K    SP/DM/ 8 players
Authored by- Matt Fox [Mix]
I knew this was a pretty good level from the very beginning when I saw my ship blow a hole into the strogg base! From that point on it was pretty much non stop action throughout the entire level. I liked the way the author made me hunt a little for the real entrance. The messages were enough to let you know what you had to do almost all of the time. The level flow was great with very little backtracking. There were only two things I would have liked to seen in this map. A little better ending as it was pretty abrupt and some secrets to make things a little more interesting. But don't let those two things stop you from playing this exciting level. It was packed full of fun! The monster placement was for the most part very well done and helped make it quite a challenge. There was a pretty cool looking dome in the communications room that I wouldn't mind learning how to make myself =)

3-16-98    First Strike   965K    SP/DM/CO 16 players
Authored by- Scott McNutt
When Scott said "Talk is cheap, but bullets are cheaper. It is time to give that trigger finger some exercise." in his text file, he wasn't kidding as you will soon see in this really fine level made for the QERadiant contest! It has just about every ingredient for the great Killer Map that it is. You are sure to have some great fun trying to get through this level on hard skill as the monster density (89), placement and items are just about perfect. The structural design and flow of the level are also hard to beat. I really enjoyed seeing this level as well as playing it. It really could have been in a mission pack or on the CD itself. This level will also be great in deathmatch for up to 16 players and Co-op too! I really liked finding the 3 secrets and was darn glad to have the items he had in them. So stop what you are doing and download this impressive map today!

3-13-98    The Bloodshrine   1.12M    SP/DM 8 players
Authored by- James Parkman aka "gloom"
I thoroughly enjoyed playing this authors latest level since he last released the Killer Map, "Abandon all Hope". It has great architecture, some new textures and new sounds. The flow of this level was good and his monster placement just short of excellent for a good challenge as it didn't take me long to be quite dead on easy skill the first time through =). There were 4 secrets of which I have still only found 1. The level is so good I will keep looking for them. He even has an interesting story line included in the text file. Overall, this is a pretty tough level to beat but there is just enough items and ammo to get the job done. I hope to see more of this authors work in the future. Get this Killer Map and have some serious fun!

3-13-98    Arkanian   1.63M    SP/CO
Authored by- Mike Daugherty (aka Jerkoff)
Here is a three map level with a little start map, a large map in the middle and a fairly small end map that will be the source of many hours of fun for you if you have a fairly beefy computer as it can really send the slower computers to a crawl in some spots. Mike probably could have fixed this problem but ran out of time. The plot was good and worked very well with the entire level giving me a pretty good idea what I was doing there. The authors monster placement was very good as was his item placement. The architecture was great in some spots. There is a complete lack of secrets in this level but you will be too busy fighting your way through it to notice. I enjoyed the use of lighting in this level too. It was a great challenge in the hard skill as you will need just about everything you can save to finish. You will have a lot of fun playing this level so get it today!

3-11-98    Mercy at Strogos DETEN3   922K    SP
Authored by- Brad Kiefer
A very interesting and fun level even though it was this authors first try. I found the overall flow of the level to be quite excellent and his monster placement was excellently executed. There is a fairly new twist in the theme as you have to go in and mercy kill all of your buddies to prevent them from any more suffering from the Strogg. The items found on your pals will come in really useful enabling you to complete the mission. I have spent many hours of fun playing this level and except for some placement of ammo you cant use because of a lack of the proper weapons, I couldn't really find anything else to gripe about. I enjoyed most of the architecture and he also had a few secrets which come in mighty handy and were fun to find. Get this level and find out why I call it a Killer Map!

3-11-98    Old Storage Area    553K    SP
Authored by- Juha Koiste
This is the first Q2 level Juha has produced but don't let that scare you because he has also made plenty of killer Quake maps in the past and this level is a real thriller! I really enjoyed the basic layout of it with many different situations to be confronted with as you play. He even threw in pallets stacked around the place to add to the realism of a warehouse area. I thought that was kind of neat since I hadn't seen that before. The monster and item placement was excellently done making for a good challenge. The fun factor of this level is quite high and I thoroughly enjoyed playing it and look forward to seeing more Quake 2 levels from Juha in the future. Get it and have a great time!

3-4-98    Abandon all Hope    694K    SP/CO/DM 2-8 players
Authored by- James Parkman aka "gloom"
You really don't need to abandon "all" hope with this level but it will be a lot of fun and a challenge as well. I really enjoyed the game flow of this level as I knew where to go almost all of the time. There is a shortcut to the end which I found the first time through... see if you can find it. The monster placement and item placement is pretty good on all difficulty levels. There are two secrets which you will definitely be happy to find and the items will be welcome as well. I would have had this up a couple of days sooner but I was having too much fun playing it! This level is should also be a lot of fun for you and 7 others in a deathmatch. Grab this level today!
