lightwave bones problem

Whenever I activate a bone in lightwave it immediately
distorts the shape of the area I have assigned it to
influence. When I rotate the bones vertices that should
move are left behind others move and I'm left with a twisted mess.
Any ideas what's going wrong?

Also would it be better when using lightwave and creating
a player and weapon model to create them as two seperate objects
and animate them in the same scene or as one object. If you
were to create them as one object how would you go about seperating
them for the player.md2 and weapon.md2?
