: i'd go with lightwave 5.5 because you get built in bones, fast ik, a great modeler, it costs less than 3ds max, comes with a handy plugin called savemorf that lets you export selected animation frames to numbered .lwo files instead of having to save each frame by hand. and ken turner's modified version of qdata supports .lwo files. i've used both 3ds max 1.2 and truespace 3, and i think lightwave's modeler is a hell of a lot easier to use. truespace 3 really isn't a good idea...it's ik is crap, there aren't any bones, and it's a pain to export your animations. 3ds max is a great program, but it costs quite a bit more than lightwave, and you don't get bones or the ability to save out your animation frames automatically. you can buy plugins to go with max that will make animation easier (like bones pro and character studio) but that of course drives the price way up again. with lightwave you'll have everything you need for $1800.

well, i already HAVE Lightwave 5.5 AND MAX 2, and i can get Truespace ( heaven forbid) real easy. The trouble is, i can now only afford good documentation on one program :). Lightwave soundin better, but i tried your tutorial (which was for 5.0) and modeling was a lot more difficult than MAX2
