I hardly think that a extra number of models in you players directory can effect the game quality so to say that PPMs generaly effect the speed would prolly be false.

On the other hand some of the PPM models that have a higher polycount then the basic player or other 'errors' like to large textures might cause a drop in fps if lots of them are being calculated by Q2, This is likely to happen also with the regular player even on a over average system....

Perhaps its just that when you use the PPMs you direct more of your attention to the system prefomace. If one model you use is visually effecting your preformance you can always delete it or just rename the directory, and it will not show up and therefor not effect the game at all.
