how do i make/animate hinges, sliders, etc

I'm making a transformer kind of model (that transforms) and i need to know how to make sliding objects - a cover plate that slides back and forth over something, and something like a fist sliding into an arm.
Also, can I use seperate objects in Lightwave Layout, then save the frame as ONE object for the md2? or do i have to make just one object?
