Thats a sorta big subject you know...anyway, here is
basicly what you need to do.

I would recommend using the ascmaker plugin to
move the model from max to a md2 program, (in this
case q2modeller for starters). Then in a md2 utility
you will need to create a good texture mapping for your
model...no the max uvw mapping will not follow the
model when you export it. Even if it did you could
moste sertainly improve it with the md2 mapping. After
you have completed the mapping you either load it into
NST and paint the skin directly on the mesh or you
export a facemap skin and paint the real skin with a
2d pain program such as Paintshop Pro or Photoshop.

All the work, tips and tricks and so on, inbetween these steps
could make the base for a not so small book so when you
ecounter problems just for solutions for that specific problem.
